AI and Recruitment in 2026: Skills Employers Want
AI and Recruitment in 2026: Which Skills Are Becoming More Valuable?
“Will AI take my job?”
It's probably the wrong question.
A more useful question is:
“Which parts of my job can AI perform, and which skills become more valuable because of it?”
Artificial intelligence is already changing how businesses work, how candidates apply for jobs and how employers think about skills. But the story isn't simply about replacing people.
Jobs are changing before they disappear
AI is particularly effective at tasks involving information processing, pattern recognition, drafting, analysis and repetitive work. That means some tasks are becoming faster and easier. It also means the skills surrounding those tasks can become more valuable.
The World Economic Forum has highlighted the growing importance of human judgement as AI adoption increases. As routine tasks become easier to automate, the ability to interpret information, navigate ambiguity and make decisions in context becomes increasingly important.
The skills gaining value
Employers are likely to place increasing value on people who can combine technology with human capability.
Think:
-
Critical thinking
-
Problem-solving
-
Communication
-
Leadership
-
Adaptability
-
Creativity
-
Commercial judgement
-
Relationship management
-
Continuous learning
-
Practical AI literacy
You don't necessarily need to become an AI engineer.
But knowing how to use AI effectively within your profession is becoming increasingly useful.
What does this mean for employers?
- Companies should reconsider how they write job descriptions.
- If AI can already handle part of a role, does the company still need to hire exactly the same profile it hired three years ago?
- Perhaps not.
- The better question is what the person needs to contribute beyond what the technology can already do.
- That could mean more emphasis on judgement, ownership, client relationships, leadership or strategic thinking.
What does this mean for candidates?
- Don't simply add “AI” to your CV.
- Show how you use it.
- Have you automated reporting? Improved productivity? Analysed data faster? Reduced repetitive work? Used AI to improve decision-making?
- The value isn't necessarily knowing the technology.
It's knowing how to apply it.
Our view
AI won't make human talent irrelevant. But it will change what makes talent valuable. The strongest professionals of the next few years may not be the people who compete with AI. They'll be the people who know when to use it, when not to use it, and when human judgement still matters most. And employers who understand that distinction will be better positioned to hire the people their businesses actually need.
